How Indian Freelancers Invoice Clients (Domestic and Overseas)

The Ledger Team

How does an Indian freelancer invoice a client? For Indian clients, issue a clear invoice in INR and add GST details if you are registered. For overseas clients, invoice in the agreed foreign currency with payment instructions for your bank, Wise, Payoneer, or another method. Either way, include a unique invoice number, dates, a clear description of work, and payment terms.

Invoicing Indian Clients

  • Invoice in INR and show your name, address, and PAN if appropriate.
  • If registered for GST, issue a tax invoice with your GSTIN, SAC code, and tax lines. See the GST invoice format guide.
  • Mention TDS if the client deducts it, so both sides can reconcile the payment.
  • Add bank details or a UPI ID for payment.

Invoicing Overseas Clients

State the currency clearly, describe the work, and add the payment method. Exports of services have specific GST treatment, which may involve a Letter of Undertaking, so confirm the current rules with a chartered accountant. Details for bank wires are in invoicing a foreign client from South Asia.

Describe the Work Clearly

Write specific descriptions, for example "Mobile app UI design, 12 screens, 2 revision rounds, delivered 5 to 20 October". The freelance invoice guide covers hourly, project, and retainer billing.

Payment Terms

Use Net 7, Net 15, or Net 30 depending on the client and agree on them before you begin. See invoice payment terms explained.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a freelancer in India need to charge GST?

It depends on your turnover and the nature of your services. If you are above the registration threshold, you generally must register and charge GST. Confirm with a chartered accountant.

What is TDS on a freelancer invoice?

Some clients deduct tax at source before paying. Showing the TDS clearly helps you reconcile payments and claim credit later.

Can I accept UPI payment on an invoice?

Yes for domestic clients. Add your UPI ID or payment link on the invoice.
